Sometimes I feel like this blog turns into a massive dialogue that could be filed under the tag “Well Hello Jeanie, Who’s Bothering You Now?” But today I have nothing to bitch about; instead, I need a favor.
You know how I talk about my book club in DC over and over and over again? Well, one of our members had a majorly bad wreck this weekend while cycling. She is currently looking at a long rehab for Traumatic Brain Injury and a host of physical issues. Her husband posted video of her today and she is awake and talking, which was amazing and wonderful to see, but I know she is in for a long, long few months. So here’s what I need for you to do:
1. Wear your fricken helmet when you ride your bikes. It almost certainly saved her life.
2. Good vibes, prayers, whatever positive energy you have to send to the universe, please send it to my friend. She has a newborn daughter and a long road of recovery and must be so scared. I know I am.
If you guys know Laura, Kyle is posting updates here

Thanks for posting the link to the blog. I was wondering what was going on when I saw some ‘get well’ posts on FB. I met Laura years ago at the first Total 200 when I was riding, she was volunteering and so was Brent. I don’t think they knew each other before then but Brent was so sure they had met before. Turns out they were stationed in Iraq together a few years before and had met there. A year later I was having a consultation for LASIK and told the doc how I worked out a lot, did tris, trail running, etc. He was meeting another patient that day who was 3 months post-LASIK and biked a lot and wanted me to hear how the surgery went for her. It was Laura.
It’s scary to think how many people still don’t wear helmets when they ride. I will admit I do sometimes, but that’s VERY rare and only when I just happen to get one of the bikeshares but wasn’t planning on it. You bet I’m riding slow and with caution.
Definitely thinking about Laura and her family now and over the next few months.
I’m so, so sorry to hear about your friend. I’ll be keeping her in my thoughts.
Natalie – thank you. It’s been really hard to think about what her family is going through, and how long recovery will be, etc. EEeeep 😦
Wow, I am glad I saw this! I hadn’t seen it on FB… Very scary!
Tyler – glad I was able to point you over there. SO scary, but glad to see she is improving!!! Thankfully she has SO much strength going into a wreck like that there’s no reason to think she won’t fully recover. Phew.
Liz, I’ll be thinking about your friend too. What a scary thing to go through. It sounds like she has a fantastic support network, so I’m sure that will help her recovery.
